Short track speed skating competition starts in September and culminates with the World Championships in March.

ISU World Cups

The International Skating Union hold six World Cups each year. Two competitions are held on 3 continents: Asia, North America and Europe.

These competitions are important for two reason. First, they determine a skaters ranking for the season. Secondly, these competitions along with the World Championships are the primary skating events open to all countries. Major skating teams in Asia, Europe and North America attend at least 4 events. Also, the World Cups attract smaller teams like Isreal and Slovenia.

Ranking points are given to the skaters each event. 100 points to the winner, 99pts to 2nd place and so on. The best 4 are added to determine a skaters rank for the season. 200 points is the most points a skater can have which means that skater won at least 4 of the 6 World Cups. In case of a tie in ranking points, the skater that attended fewer events is ranked higher, i.e. the skater that attends 4 events but gets the same amount of points as a skater who attended 5 events.
